Abstract

Cascading failure is the main mechanism of large blackouts in power grid. In this paper, a model of cascading failure propagation based on synergetics theory is constructed. Numerical simulations show that the macroscopic properties of the power grid during cascading failure propagation are governed by the general laws of synergetics. Real blackout data are also consistent with this model. This discovery of synergetic behavior in cascading failure propagation in power grid might shed some new lights on analyzing and preventing large blackouts in complex power grid.
