Abstract

The interaction of the weak ferromagnetic moments of hematite, α‐Fe2O3, crystallites with the external dc magnetic field is studied by using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction. The observed angular distribution of the scattered intensities on the Debye‐Scherrer rings provide information about the reorientation of the crystallites. A quantitative model of the reorientation process is described. The proposed experimental method gives information which is complementary to powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction and magnetization studies. This method can be used to characterize the weak ferromagnetic states of novel multiferroic materials.
