Abstract

Cyber physical power systems are modern power systems that consists of cyber layer additions to the physical power network. They use intelligent devices to carry out digital processing functions to improve the existing network. The phasor measurement unit is one of such intelligent devices that can be used for wide area monitoring applications. Dynamic thermal rating systems allows the expansion of transmission line capacities to cater for increasing demands. Subsequently, this chapter provides an overview of cyber-physical power systems, focusing on synchrophasor-based dynamic thermal rating systems. The chapter includes a background on synchrophasor technology and DTR implementation, including the overall synchrophasor DTR structure, communication mediums, the additional benefits to the existing power system structure, and some of the shortfalls involved with implementation. This chapter represents a reference document for prospective researchers to understand the fundamentals of synchrophasor-based DTR applications on modern cyber-physical power systems.
