Abstract

This work is aimed to compare the performance of TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) and SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) for damping power oscillations in the generator / long transmission line system. In order to reach better performance to damp generator oscillations, the SSSC is controlled as a variable reactance, called Converter Based Controlled Reactance (CBCR). On the other hand, a modified Power Oscillation Damper (POD) controller is applied to the TCSC for damping purposes. The performance of these equipments were analyzed using the IEEE Benchmark model concluding that the proposed CBCR has better performance than the TCSC for damping both electromechanical power oscillation and the subsynchronous resonance (SSR).
