Abstract

We describe a method for establishing synchronization between stations using arbitrary signals from space of unknown origin. The method presented is based on time of arrival (TOA) measurements collected by wireless sensor network, with sensors at known locations. The same methods can be applied to TDOA measurements allowing the use of a larger family of signals. The structure of the measurements model is exploited to enable computationally efficient synchronization of the network. A by-product is the identification of the azimuth and elevation of the signals from space. A tool for predicting the synchronization accuracy at any error levels has been devised. Simulation results are presented and compared with the theoretical bound and the predicted performance curve.
