Abstract

Prostaglandin was used to synchronize oestrus in 17 heifers, ranging in age from two years eight months to four years, of the White Fulani, Sokoto Gudali and Friesian X White Fulani breeds during the dry season (March). Two injections each of 500 μg cloprostenol were administered intramuscularly 11 days apart. The heifers were inseminated with chilled semen in an egg yolk–citrate diluent at 72 and 96 h after the second injection. Fifty-four per cent of the heifers had ovulated 96 h after the second injection; 59% conceptions and 59% calvings were recorded.
