Abstract
The animation shows calcium-stimulated exocytosis of synaptic vesicles followed by clathrin-mediated vesicle recycling. Many of the molecular components that are involved in synaptic vesicle priming, docking, fusion, and endocytosis are shown. Although the process in the animation describes synaptic vesicle cycling, similar cellular processes occur for most calcium-coupled secretory and clathrin-mediated endocytotic events. The animation could be used to help illustrate the sequence of events associated with both exocytosis and endocytosis, as well as aid in understanding the processes involved in neurotransmitter release in response to nerve stimulation.
