Abstract

A study of the functioning of the ancient synagogue as a community and in particular of its social integration within the polis in the Eastern Roman Empire, for which our evidence is very inadequate. The study is conducted through detailed examination of two short honorific inscriptions from different cities of average importance. The first is the text concerning the refurbishment of the « house » built by an important member of the civic elite, the high priestess Julia Severa at Acmonia in Phrygia. The second concerns a donation made by another woman, a certain Tation at Phocaea in Ionia. Together, they suggest a pattern of behaviour in the synagogues modelled upon that of the city at large. They reveal the synagogues as outward looking institutions, loci of articulation between the Jewish community and the wider society.
