Abstract

Patients often want to know more about their symptoms in order to determine what disease they have and use their symptoms stories as method of communicating with their doctors. However, the ways they tell their symptoms stories fill in a few disadvantages. This thesis aims to find more effective ways to help patients share their symptoms stories with physicians. The thesis project investigates intersection of healthcare, data visualization and illustration. It explains some basic elements of healthcare, for example, what is symptom. And then introduces some visual storytelling methods in patient-physician exchange, and analyzes some existing visual storytelling as inspirations, knowledge from them. Specifically, this thesis focuses on gastritis, a stomach disease, proposing a sticker system to help patients record their symptoms, signs and daily life by sticking stickers on a body shape board each day, Additionally, it offers a concept for a data transformation app, transforming the patient's daily body shape boards into a video to help physicians understand patient's symptoms over time. It is helpful for patients to gather multiple types of information to make richer symptom-driven visual storytelling.
