Abstract

1. Symptomatic hypoglycemia occurs predominantly in male infants of low birth weight for the period of gestation. 2. Approximately 50% of the mothers had toxemia of pregnancy. 3. Low levels of glucose were found in the smaller of twins, with central nervous system pathology, and in the presence of polycythemia. On occasion, low levels of calcium were also present. 4. Therapy consists of intravenous glucose, plus ACTH or steroids as needed to relieve symptoms and maintain normal levels of blood glucose. 5. The pathogenesis may reflect intrauterine malnutrition with low stores of glycogen present at birth associated with an abnormally sensitive insulin release mechanism resulting in hypoglycemia and symptoms.
