Abstract

Excitation and sensitization of transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) by the action of capsaicin (CAP) are established to be a major mechanism by which primary afferent nociceptors are activated and sensitized. TRPV1 receptors are located on small diameter neurons of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) with Adelta and C primary afferent nociceptive axons. Sympathetic post-ganglionic efferents are involved in the modulation of nociceptive transmission. The data presented here were collected in our ongoing study “Sympathetic modulation of acute neurogenic inflammation” to determine if sensitization of primary afferent nociceptors by activating TRPV1 receptors following intradermal injection of CAP is sympathetically modulated.
