Abstract

In this chapter we start our conceptual study of the general theory of symmetry in science, which is continued in the following two chapters. The conceptual approach to symmetry, in contrast to the symmetry formalism developed in Chapters 4–7, is the best approach for understanding the concepts involved in symmetry and the significance of symmetry in science.
