Abstract

Abstract The effect of a beam transport element is given by a general transformation function which includes both transfer matrix and aberration terms. Restrictions imposed by the symmetry properties of the element are used to express this transformation function in terms of a minimal set of parameters. This makes it possible to eliminate the internal inconsistencies in a set of measurements on the element and to order such a set so that it yields the maximum information. The theory is illustrated by an example in which the parameters are derived (and thus the element completely described) using only a very simple set of measurements.
