Abstract
Various spectroscopic data indicate that the symmetry of hexa(chloro) europiate(III) ion in ethanolic solutions is not quite octahedral. An MCD study is presented in which a formalism is developed for randomly oriented molecules, in the case of z absorption, in order to assess this symmetry. The MCD spectrum of the 5D2←7F0 transition displays two ’’B’’ terms of the same intensity, but of opposite sign. A detailed analysis of these features leads to the conclusion that the symmetry of the EuCl3−6 ion is D2.
