Abstract

The temperature dependence of the tunneling spectrum of the ammonium ion in (NH 4) 2PdCl 6 is studied by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering up to T = 46 K. The A → T transition is found to be at any temperature broader by a factor ∼2 than the T → E line and the quasielastic component (T → T transitions). This shows for the first time for ammonium rotors that the totally symmetric A librational state couples more strongly to phonons than the T- and E-symmetric states.
