Abstract

We apply for the first time the group-theoretical formalism of Landau's theory to derive the symmetry changes that may arise in the smectic B E and HVI phase transitions of second order. The critical behavior is found to be Heisenberg-like ( n = 3) in the B E transitions and Ising-like in the HVI transitions. Criticism of Meyer's theory of the B E transition is given.
