Abstract

The superspace group of the first incommensurate phase in Betaine calcium chloride dihydrate is determined using recently reported diffraction data. By this means, the symmetry of the corresponding order parameter can be identified. The space groups of the successive commensurate phases, which the compound exhibits, are deduced under the assumption that in all phases the transformation properties of the modulated distortion are maintained, only varying the modulus of the modulation wavevector and the modulation initial phase. The predicted symmetry changes between the different structural phases can explain in general terms the dielectric behaviour of the compound along the whole phase transition sequence. The stability of the different phases when an electric field is applied is also discussed.
