Abstract
Two sets of generalized symmetries of the potential Nizhnik–Novikov–Veselov equation are given in a simple formula by developing a generalized formal series method for searching symmetries of one type of generalized partial differential equations. These two sets of symmetries constitute an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra which contains three types of Virasoro algebras and three w∞ type algebras as its special cases.
