Abstract

In the amphibian egg the future plane of bilateral symmetry of the embryo is predominantly fixed by the spermatozoon. The injection of sperm homogenate into the subcortical region of the egg of the toad Bufo arenarum shows that structural integrity of the sperm cell is not required for this symmetrization process. Thus, in all homogenate-treated eggs the future dorsal side of the embryo, indicated by the grey crescent, appeared at the opposite side of the injection point. No such effect was observed after the injection of Ringer solution.
