Abstract
This chapter provides a more detailed introduction to the concepts and objects which form the foundation of the research on which this thesis reports. The focus lies on the discussion of the Maldacena–Wilson loop as well as the various symmetry structures that will be interesting with respect to it. As a prerequisite for the discussion of the Maldacena–Wilson loop, brief introductions to \(\mathcal {N}\!=4\) supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory as well as the AdS/CFT correspondence are also given.
