Abstract
A unique case of symmetrical peripheral gangrene following pulmonary embolism is reported. Pre-existing peripheral vascular disease of the sclerotic type was present. Excessive peripheral vasoconstriction secondary to circulatory collapse is considered the principal factor, although poor oxygenation due to impaired pulmonary function contributed. The patient survived, but sustained extensive loss of tissue. Seven months after discharge, the patient expired suddenly in another city. Post-mortem examination was not done.
