Abstract

This chapter discusses theoretically the subject of dreams and their relations to the other research subjects. Dreams are understood as important origins of symbolic imaginaries and cultures, and their specific significance and functions for the latter are discussed. Dream is conceptualized as a natural product of the unconscious and its symbolic function. Dynamics and functioning of the unconscious are explained through the dream as its embodiment. Possible relations between dream and subjectivity depend on hermeneutic outlooks, which are presented. The methodological proposition of applying simultaneously the interpretations on the subjective level and on the objective level to the empirical night dream situates the dream as object of study of the dialectical relationship between individual and culture, and reflects cultural psychology’s idea of psychological dialogism.
