Abstract
Abstract The Sylow theory of finite groups is concerned with the existence and properties of Sylow subgroups and other subgroups of specified orders. Many of the concepts and results can be transferred directly to profinite groups. Because the emphasis in this chapter is on the passage from finite groups to profinite groups, the results from finite group theory will for the most part be assumed. Their proofs can be found in elementary books on group theory.
