Abstract

Tsukasa Mizusawa M.S.W. in conjunction with Scott Johnson L.A.C., will present the following information as it pertains to Japan: Common topics shared by Japan and the U.S.: We share the same illness. Data on socio-economic effects of addiction on Japanese addicts, families, children and society at large. Differences between Japan and the U.S. are presented. Japanese treatment modalities. Differences between Japanese and U.S. mutual help support groups, i.e. Danshukai and 12 Step programs, i.e. N.A., A.A. Comparison between Japanese cultural and religious connections and western spirituality. Conclusion. Although we share the same illness, Japanese cultural differences must be considered when implementing evidence based treatment modalities. Tsukasa Mizusawa M.S.W. will then present a brief history of what he has done to support this effort. After the three other speakers have finished presenting their work to support this effort, Mr. Mizusawa will join the three in a call for support by the audience. Specific issues: Need for research that supports the development and continued improvement of culturally sensitive treatment modalities. Need for training of culturally sensitive treatment modalities. Need for establishment of Japanese laws protecting confidentiality of the medical records.
