Abstract

This paper describes a method of modeling of the fluid force in the simulation model for human swimming, SWUM (SWimming hUman Model) which is capable of considering the dynamics of the whole human body. In the simulation model, the fluid force acting on each part of the body is assumed to consist of the inertial force due to the added mass and the drag force which is proportional to the square of the velocity of the normal and tangential directions, and they are formulated in the form using the fluid coefficients, respectively. Then, the fluid coefficients are identified by experiments in which the simplified model of the human limbs is moved underwater on various conditions, and the displacement and the fluid force are measured. As the results, the errors can be reduced sufficiently to all measured values, and the validity of formulation is confirmed.
