Abstract

Planning for the 2004 International SWS Meeting is in full swing. Next year’s theme celebrates the society’s progress through the first 25 years as a stepping stone to the future of wetlands science, policy, and education. Initial results of our planning promise that this conference will be spectacular. I know this because the Steering Committee meetings have been a BLAST!! A more creative group never organized a technical, scientific conference. We have been conducting regular monthly meetings since April, so things are coming together in an orderly manner. The following committees have been formed: Plenary Speakers, Technical Sessions, Workshops, Field Trips, Poster Session, Travelog, Publicity, Merchandise, Silent Auction, Exhibits, Sponsorships, Volunteers, Graphics Production, Meeting Venue, Audiovisual, Catering and Accommodations, Transportation/Childcare/Family Events, and Entertainment, 25th Anniversary Celebration. Progress is being made on all fronts. Seattle is so incredible in the summer, has so many tourist amenities and so many activities are planned to entertain participants and their families that it will be challenging for the technical aspects of the meeting to keep our interest. Nevertheless the technical sessions promise to rise to the occasion. We are beginning to attract the best talent in the business to inform and inspire our participants. We hope that our outreach activities to publicize the event at the national meeting in New Orleans this summer will be effective in encouraging participation from members in the US and around the world. We are also reaching outside the SWS membership base. Special symposia exploring topics such as Wetland Insects, and Wetlands and Fish Interactions are being developed. The themes from some of the symposia will link through the technical sessions and the fieldtrips. Seventeen field trips have already been identified, and several of the proposed workshops will be designed to dig deeper into some of the field trip themes. The silent auction will generate funds to support student scholarships. The meals and entertainment will be absolutely top-notch, with a focus on the Northwest’s worldfamous seafood, microbreweries and wineries. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! July 18–23, 2004
