Abstract
Switzerland has four language areas: a German, a French, an Italian, and a Romansch area. The German-speaking population, using an Alemannic dialect in everyday communication, is the largest language group. In French-speaking Switzerland the dialects have, due to negative stereotypes, almost died out. Around half of the Italian-speaking inhabitants in Switzerland are Italian immigrants, who have settled in all the linguistic areas of Switzerland, while the other half lives in the Italian language area in southern Switzerland. The Romansch-speaking population is the smallest language group in Switzerland; the Romansch language is threatened by extinction. Around 20% of Switzerland's population is foreign.
