Abstract

Since 1974 Switzerland has carried out 5-yearly statistical surveys of the population's travel behaviour (travel behaviour microcensus). In 2, 000 some 27, 918 households (29, 407 individuals) were questioned by telephone on the following main topics: ownership of vehicles, driving licenses and season tickets; daily amount of travel(number of journeys, time spent, distances); reasons for travel and use of means of transport, journeys with overnight stays and air travel; attitudes to Switzerland's transport policy. The data collected enable a detailed picture of passenger traffic in Switzerland to be built up. They serve as a statistical basis for drafting policy measures and monitoring results, but also as raw material for more in-depth analyses of traffic and transport trends.
