Abstract

The World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of a flu pandemic in June this year was the first since the global Hong Kong flu outbreak of 1968 which killed about 1 million people. The Spanish flu outbreak in 1918-19 was the most serious to date and killed 40-50 million people worldwide (WHO, 2009). This pandemic is significant because of the potential impact on the way in which we work, care for our patients and go about our daily lives.
