Abstract

The article discusses what the journey of a handful of dust reveals about the fragile nature of planet Earth. The author notes that scientists have neglected the interrelatedness of natural dust and the atmosphere despite their devotion to the study of air pollution. He suggests that an increasing number of scientists are beginning to appreciate the influence of dust on climate and cloud formation, including its impact on ocean fertilization and rain forests. Topics include the challenges of studying the effect of dust on the atmosphere, such as the complexity of the relationship, and research attempting to follow the migration of a handful of dust originating from the Bodele depression in Africa's Sahara desert to the Amazon in South America.
