Abstract

Sweeping out James Still's Log Home near Hindman, Kentucky Libby Falk Jones (bio) Beyond the well, now boarded up, I climbthe mossy steps into the darkened house, home of mice, dry leaves, dust. Silencesits. In the dim kitchen I grab the broom, clear a corner near the rusting stove, with an extra swipe boost crumbling leavesonto the grass where Naked Ladies bloom. There's spirit in a sweep—a clean sweep—on a bright afternoon by Wolfpen Creek, that river of earth. So Jim must have sweptand slept, fried food and read, penned his poemsand stories, moseyed down to the country storeto sit a spell. At his hearth, among these hillshe could not leave, can I sweep in his heart? [End Page 64] Libby Falk Jones Libby Falk Jones is Chester D.
