Abstract

The present study examines parental discipline. Parents in 200 families with children aged 1–7 years were asked how to handle conflicts in a dressing, a playing, a traffic, a shopping and a bedtime situation. According to “Parental Discipline Interview” the methods selected were: Low Use of Authority (34%), Coercive Verbal Control (31%), Behavior Modification (15%), Physical Restraint (13%), Reasoning (6%) and Physical Punishment (1%). Reasoning and Behavior Modification were used more frequently by mothers. Characteristics of the child, such as age, sex and temperament, as well as characteristics of the parents, such as age, traditional or progressive attitudes and social status, predicted disciplinary methods selected.
