Abstract

Virus populations that carry genes of adenovirus 7 and of SV40 were studied for their ability to infect and replicate in human and green monkey kidney cells. Cytolytic infection and resultant plaque formation in monkey cells require two separate virus particles; the cytopathic infection of a human cell requires only one particle. Evidence is presented that the two particles required for the infection of a simian cell are phenotypically similar in that each particle has an adenovirus capsid. However, the particles are genotypically different in that SV40-derived genes are carried by only one of them, while the second particle seems to contain only the adenovirus genome.
