Abstract

When working as an operating department practitioner, surgical care practitioner, or a surgical first assistant, it is important to have the knowledge to choose the appropriate suture material, needle and method of wound closure. The operator must have a safe and secure technique when tying knots during wound closure. This article outlines the different suture materials and needles available to practitioners and how to chose the appropriate material when closing wounds. The article will also discuss the two main techniques for knot tying.
