Abstract

Skillful wound closure requires proper knowledge of the physical characteristics of the wound; knowledge of surgical technique; and familiarity with different types of needles, sutures, and instruments to use for a specific condition. Better randomized, double-blind, and controlled studies are needed to confirm that long-lasting absorbable monofilament sutures reduce the risk of suture erosion without increasing surgical failure. There seems to be enough evidence for surgeons to use long-lasting monofilament absorbable sutures instead of permanent sutures with their potential unfavorable consequences. This should help prevent repeated surgeries, and in the case described here could have potentially avoided three extra surgeries with significant reduction of morbidity.
