Abstract

A precessing container is useful for turbulent mixing of the confined fluid. Fully developed turbulence is sustained by a weak precession. We examine the turbulence suppression in the container by a small amount of surfactant additive by means of flow visualization and particle image velocimetry to reveal the sustaining mechanism of the developed turbulence of water, a Newtonian fluid. Considering our experimental results with previous theories about the onset of the turbulence suppression, we conclude that developed turbulence in a precessing container is sustained by an energy cascade.
