Abstract

There are several models of the evolution and development of IS in organisations, the Nolan–Norton model being perhaps the best known example. It is argued that the effectiveness of the use of IS in an organisation depends on an evolving understanding of nature of IS value and that the speed of this evolution is in large part a function of organisational and IS leadership. The role of leadership and its relationship to the concept of absorptive capacity as outlined by Boynton et al. is analysed from an IS value perspective and a three-dimensional ripple model of IS value evolution is proposed.
