Abstract

Fly ashes have innumerable desirable properties and can find applications in civil engineering, particularly in geotechnical engineering. The study is aimed at enhancing their applicability addressing the issues related to the trace metal leachability, improved engineering behaviour, and long term performance by reducing the lime leachability concern. Their bulk utilization can achieve economy in geotechnical applications by addressing their disposal and associated environmental concerns. An attempt is made to reduce the lime leachability of low lime fly ashes and study their implications on various geotechnical applications up on treating with them lime and gypsum. The study revealed that addition of lime along with gypsum aids in significant reduction of hydraulic conductivity, trace metal leachability, compressibility behavior but enhances the unconfined compressive strength.
