Abstract

AbstractA growing body of evidence across distinct disciplines points out the tremendous role of environment quality in shaping the health and well-being of urban populations. While some elements and characteristics of the environment can contribute to health problems, others can be used as tools to promote health throughout the lifespan, facilitate recovery, and develop resilience against health risks present in constantly expanding cities. Concurrently, healthcare systems are economically and logistically burdened, emphasizing the need for cost-effective and universally accessible self-care solutions to support traditional treatments, as well as policy tools to bring self-care solutions to people. In this chapter we discuss the impact of urbanization on mental and physical health, as well as broad community health, and provide directions for researchers and policy makers for nature-based solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Insights from urban planning and design, clinical and epidemiological research, social science, and environmental justice have informed our proposal for a novel framework—Harmonious Ecosystem for Sustainable Solutions in Urban Health, based on the 4Rs frame of action: Recognize, Research, provide Resources and Rebuild. This is to promote sustainable urban planning for public health benefits in both Global North and Global South countries.KeywordsUrbanHealthMentalSustainableCommunity
