Abstract

The global use of inorganic fertilisers in agriculture is rising, resulting in an increase in nitrous oxide emissions and heavy metals entering watercourses and groundwater. This paper outlines the potential for human waste to be reused as a fertiliser. It highlights techniques and work being undertaken in Haiti, where simple technology is being used to harness the nutrient content in human waste through a thermophilic composting process while providing necessary sanitation to communities and emergency camps. Ecological sanitation toilets are also being used to separate urine and faeces at source, providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional wastewater treatment processes adopted by the majority of the developed world.
