Abstract

Nigeria is at the threshold of joining the countries that are harnessing energy from nuclear resources as the global effort is ongoing to achieve a safe and secure nuclear regime. The failure or success of this venture tremendously depends on their preparedness to achieve the global standards of nuclear security and safety. Despite the commendable efforts that have been made towards nuclear security, there are still some significant loopholes which could retard these signs of progress if not addressed. This paper reviews Nigeria’s venture into nuclear energy while considering global effort towards nuclear security and safety. The authors conducted interviews with some of the renowned indigenous energy research specialists to ascertain a valued SWOT analysis by weighing the risk factors associated with Nuclear safety and development in the country. It was concluded that the nuclear energy can be harnessed in Nigeria, provided there would be strict compliance with best global practices.
