Abstract

According to the World Health Organization 1.25 million people die from traffic accidents every year, resulting in high economic and social costs. In Ecuador the cost per deceased person is around US$200,000. Therefore, the authorities must carry out early studies to determine the causes of road accidents, so that corrective measures can be implemented to minimize losses. The motivation for undertaking the current research is to raise the level of road safety in the canton of Cuenca by detecting those variables that result in a large number of accidents. The accident rates of each of the fifteen urban parishes of Cuenca will be analyzed, and the three parishes with the highest rates will be identified for additional analysis of the five critical points in each one. Information will be collected from each of them on the state of the roads, horizontal signage, vertical signage and traffic lights in order to determine whether the causes of the accidents are connected to the poor condition or functioning of any of these road components. Once the problem or problems have been detected, changes and/or improvements will be suggested.
