The long-term survival of the global airline industry likely depends on a hyper-innovative transition to a more fully sustainable economic sector particularly considering the challenges posed by climate change, carbon emissions and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this book chapter is to outline in detail how sustainable innovation will be a critical strategy for the airline industry. The key topics discussed include conceptualizing innovation from a tourism and airline perspective, outlining the various ways sustainable innovation has shaped the global airline industry, and speculating on future opportunities and challenges in these uncertain times. Overall, the book chapter argues that both the COVID-19 economic disruptions and long-term climate change challenges are key stressors that provide a unique opportunity to leverage sustainable innovation to reframe the foundations of the global airline industry.
