Abstract

This paper provides an introduction to the special issue on Sustainable Energy and Transportation Systems. No single technology can solve the problem of ever increasing CO 2 emissions from stationary and transportation energy usage. Various single technologies must be put together and coordinated with parallel activities in the energy power generation and transportation infrastructure sectors. This special issue focuses on the methodologies and practices applied to the analysis of such sustainable energy and transportation systems. The three first papers discuss the possible changes in the transportation sector, which will make possible the integration of renewable energy. The potentials of electric, hybrid cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars are shown. Based on such recommendations, the succeeding four papers show how such technologies can be integrated into the electricity supply in such a way that fluctuating renewable energy sources are better integrated and utilised in the overall energy system.
