Abstract

Platinum (Pt)-based catalysts play a key role in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and reducing Pt content and maintaining high electrocatalytic activity and durability are essential to its promoted application. In this work, low content of Pt (10.5 wt%) loaded defective N-doped carbon aerogel (Pt/D-NCA) was synthesized using natural protonated chitosan complexed chloride platinate ion (chitosan-PtCl62-) as precursor. Pt/D-NCA exhibits better ORR (half-wave potential of 0.89 V vs RHE) and HER (57 mV vs RHE overpotential at 100 mA/cm2) performance than commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, and can be used as efficient cathode for Zn-air battery and water spitting. The defective N-doped carbon support can effectively reduce energy barrier of Pt sites through interface effect to inducing high intrinsic ORR and HER catalytic activity. This work provides a sustainable route to synthesize low Pt consumption electrocatalyst through a sustainable and environmentally friendly pathway.
