Abstract

This paper aims to assess the sustainable adaptation measures for resolving the displacement problem by environmental change considering the socioeconomic differences between the past and the present location of living places for nearby Bhusan steel plant in the Sambalpur district of Odisha. The development in this region has served the interest of some socially and economically dominant groups. It has in fact deprived the indigenous people of the ownership of the means of production and access to livelihood and natural resources. There is a growing dissatisfaction among the indigenous people for leading towards chronic impoverishment. The different dimensions of impoverishment are seen in the forms of landlessness, joblessness, marginalization and food insecurity. The mainstream of local population around the plant is ST’s and SC’s and most of them are employees of the company on the other hand, it has a displace effect on tribal and also creating water, air and sound pollution. Considering the above, the paper attempts to explain the impact of displacement through a case study of three peripheral villages (Thelkoli, Dhupenchapal and Bansimal).
