Abstract

Industries have resurfaced on a global level, seeking to upgrade industrial guidelines and policies that align with sustainable industrial practices. The petrochemical industry heavily contributes to an increased annual carbon footprint. Therefore, the petrochemical industry is on a constant surge to develop sustainable practices regarding the utilization of innumerable resources available in the petroleum industry. These practices comply with the guidelines of sustainable development goals to refine petroleum products, thus helping countries overcome incompetency related to renewable resource utilization. These goals have thus helped to achieve sustainable, eco-friendly processes in the petrochemical industry. This research aims to analyze the sustainability level of the already-practiced processes in the petroleum industry. With relevance to petroleum engineering and adopting inferences from existing literature, this research develops a narrative on further enhancing the efficacy of eco-friendly processes used in the petroleum industry for sustainable refining of petroleum products. Moreover, this research discusses existing concepts, theories, and methodologies presented in previously published research studies that comply with sustainable ecosystems. It identifies gaps, controversies, and unresolved issues that become a barrier to propagating petroleum refining processes across nations.
