Abstract

India is the second most populated country in the world with more than one-sixth of the world's population. The construction sector in India contributes to global warming, poor air quality and other such sustainability related concerns. Architectural education in India should take a holistic and sustainable approach to mitigate the challenges and issues fueled by unchecked urbanization. This paper focuses on the thrust given to the education of sustainability concerns in architecture. The first part is a qualitative and exploratory study of the syllabi and curricula of 15 institutions who impart architectural education in India. Institutions within the first 15 ranks in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking 2021 have been chosen for the comparative study. The later part consists of survey questionnaires aimed to assess the degree of inclusion of sustainability concerns in architectural curriculum from educators' and students' perspective. A total of 114 responses from educators and 200 responses from students were received from varied institutions across India. It is found that curriculum review is required to integrate sustainability in architectural education in India.
