Abstract

This chapter examines how business events, and in particular convention centers, are tackling the challenges presented by the need to enhance the sustainability of their facilities and practices. Taking examples of four major convention centers worldwide (McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, The Convention Centre Dublin, The Vancouver Convention Center and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre), the chapter considers the differing and innovative ways that these venues are improving their levels of sustainability. Innovations in building materials and design, managing energy and water use, implementing more sustainable waste management and improving procurement and supply chain processes are all examined in this chapter, along with other innovations such as rooftop gardens, air quality improvements and green cleaning systems. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the nature of sustainability in business event venues, taking into consideration the preponderance of tangible initiatives and highlights the opportunities for future patron behavior change campaigns.
