Abstract

AbstractSince few decades sustainability is an increasingly emerging and relevant topic supported nowadays by international policies. Many restrictions and rules have been introduced in order to guarantee a sustainable development and meet most of human society’s future goals. Although sustainability is a very wide topic that concerns different subjects, this paper, focusing on manufacturing companies and on the importance of reconfigurable machine tools, uses the term “sustainability” considering both an environmental and industrial point of view. In particular the evaluation of the sustainability of a new Reconfigurable Machine Tool (RMT) is proposed and compared to a conventional milling machine tool. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method has been used for the sustainability evaluation; it has been implemented through the open-source software OpenLCA. The analysis shows that the new Reconfigurable Machine Tool has lower pollutant emissions and environmental impact values are lower than the conventional milling machine tool.KeywordsSustainabilityReconfigurable machine toolMilling
